How Can I Get My Varicose Veins Removed?

Sometimes they’re inevitable, a curse of your family’s genes. Varicose veins seem to creep up out of nowhere, but they are actually caused by many things, such as pregnancy, obesity, sitting for long periods of time, and, of course, family genetics. They also usually appear as we get older, starting off as smaller veins before becoming large and bulging and painful… and the list of awful symptoms goes on and on and on.

Endovenous Laser Ablation

Endovenous laser ablation is the perfect treatment if you have large, bulging varicose veins. It treats venous valve reflux, which is one of many causes of varicose veins. Endovenous laser ablation works by using a threaded laser and using it to travel through the vein of your leg–using an ultrasound as guidance–to effectively close the vein. The laser shoots blasts of light throughout the vein, causing it to safely collapse and close for good, effectively removing the varicose vein.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy, another varicose vein removal procedure, works best for smaller veins rather than the large, bulging ones. During sclerotherapy, we inject a solution into the vein. This solution works to shrink the vein, which then closes and gradually disappears.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy

Lastly, ambulatory phlebectomy removes veins via a series of small punctures. While this sounds painful, it isn’t quite as painful as you might think. You’ll be given local anesthesia and should feel nothing more than just a little bit of pressure. The small punctures cause the vein to close and disappear permanently.

Recovery Time

All of these varicose vein removal procedures are outpatient procedures and can take anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes. Recovery time varies for each procedure but is usually rather short. After all of these procedures, we recommend that you stay active after the procedures and walk several times a day and resume normal activities. We also ask patients to take an NSAID, for example; Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, or Aleve. We usually prescribe a compression stocking for all of our patients. Compression stockings help to prevent serious complications from happening after the surgeries. You should wear them for a couple of weeks after.
